What is a Psychoethical Life?

Your worth is not in question. Your conduct is the practice.

Most of us can see clearly what other people do — and stay far less clear about our own part. We stay caught in stress, reactivity, self-neglect, and repeated relational difficulties — patterns we thought we’d already understood, returning under different names.

The psychoethical path begins from a different place: your worth is already given — it cannot be earned and cannot be erased. What can change is conduct: how you speak, what you normalize, what you excuse, what you avoid, and what you repair. In this course, we hold dignity and accountability together — building emotional competence, self-regulation, discernment, and personal agency, so your choices align with your deeper values and create the conditions for sustainable wellbeing.

Who This Group Is For

Open to anyone tired of watching the same patterns return — in marriages, families, friendships, and work — and ready to look carefully at their own part, in a group that practices honesty with kindness. No prior experience needed; the book is our shared text and guide.

Sound Familiar?

The patterns have names

You said yes when the truth was no — and felt the resentment arrive right on schedule.
You replay conversations for days, defending yourself to someone who isn’t in the room.
You over-help, over-carry, over-function — and everyone, including you, calls it love.
You talk about people instead of to them, because direct feels dangerous.
You keep the peace, and grow quietly tired keeping it.
You know the pattern by heart. It returns anyway — under a different name.

The Guide’s word for these is not broken — it’s workable: not yet clean, but with enough honesty and willingness present for real movement to happen. That movement is what this group practices.

The Practice

Four movements of the work

1Learning to See

  • How patterns become invisible when everyone treats them as ordinary.
  • Separating facts from the stories and assumptions we add — and recognizing distorted, workable, and aligned patterns.

2Common Distortions in Ordinary Life

  • The pull to defend, the need to be right, taking it personally, over-helping, and avoidance.
  • How unnamed feeling becomes distorted conduct — and how to catch yourself earlier.

3Practicing Cleaner Conduct

  • Direct speech and clean requests; boundaries and the clean “no” — without punishment, collapse, or over-explanation.
  • Follow-through, accountability, and repair: why regret is not the same as repair.

4Living the Path

  • Shame, guilt, and grace — correcting conduct without attacking worth; daily self-review without self-attack or self-excuse.
  • The Psychoethical Compass, the Five Vows, and the community that holds the practice.

Dates & Times

Every other Wednesday, 7:00 – 8:30 PM

  • All eight sessions: Sep 9 · Sep 23 · Oct 8 (Thursday) · Oct 21 · Nov 4 · Nov 18 · Dec 2 · Dec 16, 2026
  • All sessions are Wednesdays, with one exception: the October session meets Thursday, October 8.
  • One continuous cohort — you enroll once for the complete eight-session course. This is not a drop-in series: each meeting builds on a shared vocabulary, a continuing personal practice, and the trust the group develops together. New participants cannot join mid-course.
  • Miss a session? Life happens — you’ll receive the companion pages for that meeting and complete a brief catch-up practice before returning, so you rejoin the group without falling behind.
  • Your copy of the book is included — every participant receives Living a Psychoethical Life: A Guide as our gift, and works with it between sessions.
  • Offered first as this live course; a virtual course covering the same material will follow.

The Psychoethical Compass

The Five Vows

  1. I stay curious when I want to defend.
  2. I speak directly rather than sideways.
  3. I tell the truth with care.
  4. I separate conduct from worth.
  5. I choose repair over righteousness.

“The Vows are not promises of perfection. They are directions of return.” — from the Guide

What to Expect

Each session includes

Teaching from the Guide with author Pamela Cole
Clinician-guided reflection and support
Real-life scenarios as mirrors — not case studies of other people
Practice: clean requests, boundaries, repair
Group discussion and individualized goal setting

Why It’s Worth It

What changes as conduct becomes cleaner

  • You give a clean no — which is usually more loving than a false yes — without punishment, collapse, or over-explanation.
  • You ask directly for what you need, without hinting, pressure, or hoping someone guesses.
  • You stay steady under criticism — able to hear what’s true without collapsing or counterattacking.
  • You put down what was never yours to carry, and pick up what is.
  • You repair strained relationships — and recognize when release, not reconciliation, is the wiser path.
  • You end each day with honest self-review — without self-attack, and without self-excuse.

Why at a Medical Practice?

Because the body keeps the ledger. Chronic resentment, swallowed truth, and conflict that never resolves show up as poor sleep, tension, digestive trouble, and a nervous system that can’t come down. At Inner Healing Medical, we believe that being present, listening, and showing we care is where healing begins — and that health is built in the whole of a life: body, soul, and spirit.

Think of this series as lifestyle medicine for your relationships — the same salutogenic approach we bring to nutrition, sleep, and movement, applied to the emotional atmosphere you live in every day. That’s why sessions are clinician co-facilitated group medical visits, with individualized goal setting, alongside our other community healing programs.

How to Join

Medical enrollment

This series is conducted as group medical visits — real medical appointments in a supportive group setting, with Marianela Lavena, MD as the attending provider. You enroll once for the complete eight-session series — one continuous cohort that begins together on September 9. Each meeting is then registered administratively as a group medical visit; our office will guide you through that part.

Current IHM Patients

Enroll directly in the full course using our secure sign-up form, or call our office to reserve your place.

New Patients

A brief introductory visit with our Nurse Practitioner is required before joining the group. This visit establishes care and allows for personalized guidance throughout the series.

*Group visits are medical appointments billed to your health insurance, subject to your individual plan’s coverage and benefits. HMO plans require a referral from your primary care provider for coverage. If we don’t take your insurance: $200 for the full eight-class course ($25 per class). Questions? See our FAQs or contact us.

Your Guide

Meet Pamela Cole

Pamela Cole, author of Living a Psychoethical Life: A Guide

Pamela Cole is an organizational consultant, teacher, and writer whose work brings psychological understanding and ethical responsibility into a single developmental path. Over five decades, she has worked with individuals, leaders, teams, and organizations across a wide range of industries and human situations.

Her work is grounded in more than fifty years of Twelve Step recovery, together with extensive training in organizational development, emotional competence, contemplative practice, and the study of comparative religion and philosophy. She is the creator of the psychoethical framework — which distinguishes the worth that is given from the conduct that must be practiced, repaired, and refined.

Registration & Space Are Limited

No one practices a psychoethical life alone

Join a community that holds the practice — where honesty is kind, accountability is shared, and recurring patterns are recognized earlier, interrupted more cleanly, and become less able to govern your life.
